In partnership with Vibestreet HipHop Dance Studio, we are excited to offer this new dance course at Mount Doug. This course is designed for students who wish to solely dance in the style of hip hop while maintaining or enhancing their overall fitness and improving their dance skills and performance. 

​

Students will have the opportunity to both learn and create choreography for performance purposes. Students in this course will be expected to perform in front of small and large audiences.

​

Requirements:  None. Hip Hop and Dance Conditioning is a course open to all students with or without dance experience.

SENIOR DANCE

Dance Technique

and Performance 11/12

 

Come join our award-winning dance program!

 

Dance 11/12 extends from the learning of Dance 9 and 10. This senior level course is fast-paced and physically demanding. Senior students will need to take junior dance or have studio experience in order to successfully participate in this class.

 

Dance Technique and Performance 11/12 exposes students to many different dance styles (jazz, hip-hop, contemporary, swing, salsa, etc.) and aims to enable each student to develop his or her dance skills, fitness level, flexibility and performance skills. Students in this course will be expected to perform in front of small and large audiences.

 

Requirements:  Dance 9 and 10 or previous dance experience.

JUNIOR DANCE

Dance Technique

and Performance 9/10

Dance Technique and Performance 9/10 is open to all junior students with previous dance experience.  The course exposes students to many different dance styles (jazz, hip-hop, contemporary, etc.) and aims to enable each student to develop his or her dance skills, fitness level, flexibility, and performance skills. Students in this course will be expected to perform in front of small and large audiences.

 

Requirements:  Students should have previous dance studio experience or relevant experience, such as gymnastics, figure skating, cheer or cultural dance. Students without any experience are directed to take Dance Foundations.

ADVANCED

Dance Choreography 9/10/11/12

Come join our award-winning Choreography Class!

At the most recent GVPA Festival, the Mount Doug Choreography Class won the Young Choreographers Shield.

​

This course is designed for students with advanced skills in one or more styles of dance. The students in this course prepare a small-group routine that they enter in Festival. Styles choreographed in the past vary, including hip hop, jazz, contemporary, acro, tap, musical theatre and even Bollywood. Students also have the opportunity to create and/or be invited into solo, duet, trio or other small group performances.

​

Dance Choreography is a full year linear course running outside the timetable, usually one day per week at lunch and one day per week in your small group at a time set by the group.

 

Requirements:  Dance Choreography is a course open to all students who have either successfully completed an audition or have previously been given permission to register by the dance teacher. Students are required to register for BOTH Dance Choreography and Dance Company together, and one other dance program class of choice.

This performance-focused course offers instruction in advance skill-sets with an emphasis on technique and performance skills, artistic expression and musicality. If you want to progress your dancing and surround yourself with others who love to dance, this course is for you.

Dance Company is a full year linear course running outside the timetable, usually one day per week at lunch for each style with additional rehearsals closer to performance dates.

 

Requirements:  Dance Company is a course open to all students who have either successfully completed an audition or have previously been given permission to register by the dance teacher. Students are required to register for BOTH Dance Choreography and Dance Company together, and one other dance program class of choice.

BEGINNER

Dance Foundations 9/10/11/12

Looking to have some fun? Want to try dance in a safe and welcoming environment? Come join our Dance Foundations class!!

​

This course is designed for students without any or very limited dance experience, or for those students who want to dance without performing. The purpose of this class is to foster the joy of dance while teaching basics.  Students develop their coordination, strength and flexibility through warm-up and short cross floor exercises that help them to develop dance vocabulary and technique.  Students learn short pieces of choreography in a variety of genres, including hip-hop, jazz and contemporary, and perform them in class, but do not perform for large groups or in front of the school. 

​

Upon completion of Dance Foundations, students can be recommended to Dance Technique and Performance or they may continue in Dance Foundations.  

​

Requirements:  None. Dance Foundations is a course open to all students with or without dance experience.

K-Pop Dance

​

Do you love k-pop music? Do you already know some of the dances? Well then this is the perfect place to be. 

​

BTS, BLACKPINK, TXT, ITZY, NewJeans, TWICE - these are just some of the groups that this class has been dancing to this year. Choreography is offered at different levels and students can choose which routines they learn. Whether you are an experienced k-pop dancer or would like to try for the first time, this is the dance group to join. 

​

Requirements:  None. K-Pop Dance is open to all students with or without dance experience.

KPop Band
ADVANCED

Teaching Assistant 11/12

​

Experienced dancers are welcome to apply for a teaching assistant position for either Foundations, Hip Hop or Technique & Performance. 

​

Whether you wish to progress your dance teaching skills, create choreography for a large group or simply expand your confidence in leading large groups, a teaching assistant position might be a great option for you. Activities you may be required to lead or assist with include warm-up, cross-floors, choreography, costuming, one-on-one assistance, quizzing, marking, studio assistance and attendance to name a few. A positive attitude and support for creating a supportive and welcoming environment are essential for this role. 

​

Requirements:  Advanced dance skills in one or more styles of dance. Comfortable teaching a large peer group.

Yoga for Mindfulness 9/10/11/12

​

If you are looking to focus on your mental and physical health and wellness, then this is the course for you. Students taking this course will experience the health benefits of yoga and develop personal well-being management skills – skills that will help you balance school, work and other life priorities.  Through yoga, meditation, breathing techniques, and mindfulness, students will learn about themselves, and how to identify and manage the things that trigger stress in their lives.

​

Whether you are looking to decrease stress or improve strength or increase happiness or decrease anxiety or develop focus or balance out intense physical training, Yoga for Mindfulness is a great place to start.

​

Requirements:  None. This course is open to all students. No experience necessary.

​

Equipment:  Each student is provided with a mat, blocks, bolster, blanket, and other yoga props.
