Dance Technique

and Performance 11/12

Prerequisites: Dance 9 and 10 or previous dance experience.

**Senior students who did not take Dance 9 or 10 must receive approval from the dance teacher.

Dance 11/12 extends from the learning of Dance 9 and 10. This senior level course is fast-paced and physically demanding. Senior students will need to take junior dance or have studio experience in order to successfully participate in this class. Dance Technique and Performance 11/12 exposes students to many different dance styles (jazz, hip-hop, contemporary, etc.) and aims to enable each student to develop his or her dance skills, fitness level, flexibility and performance skills. Students in this course will be expected to perform in front of small and large audiences.

(This is a full year course running every second day, and students will take a different course on the alternating day)

Dance Technique

and Performance 9/10

Prerequisites: 2 years minimum of previous dance experience

**Students without any experience are suggested to take Dance Foundations 9/10/11/12.

Dance Technique and Performance 9/10 is open to all Grade 9 and 10 students with previous dance experience. The course exposes students to many different dance styles (jazz, hip-hop, contemporary, etc.) and aims to enable each student to develop his or her dance skills, fitness level, flexibility, and performance skills. Students in this course will be expected to perform in front of small and large audiences.

Dance Choreography 9/10/11/12

Prerequisites: Dance Teacher Approval

Dance Choreography is a course open to all students who have either successfully completed an audition OR have previously been given permission to register by the dance teacher.

This course is designed for students with advanced skills in one or more genres. The students in this course prepare a group choreography routine and study choreographic features and famous dance performances. They also participate in an advanced routine that encompasses a variety of genres. A high level of professionalism is expected from each student in this course.

(This is a full year course running one day per week at lunch and one day per week in your small group at a time set by the group)

Dance Company 9/10/11/12

Prerequisites: Dance Teacher Approval

Dance Choreography is a course open to all students who have either successfully completed an audition OR have previously been given permission to register by the dance teacher.

This performance-focused course offers instruction in advance skill-sets within a diverse selection of dance genres with an emphasis on technique and performance skills, artistic expression and musicality. This course includes our Hip Hop Crew, Tap Pak and Advanced Contemporary (Remembrance Day) performers. A high level of professionalism is expected from each student in this course. 

Students interested in this course are encouraged to register for Dance Technique and Performance 9/10 (Junior) or 11/12 (Senior). Students are required to register for Choreography 9/10/11/12.

(This class meets outside the timetable and is a linear course. Rehearsals are sometimes scheduled to accommodate guest choreographers)

Dance Foundations 9/10/11/12

Prerequisites: None

Dance Foundations is a course open to all students with or without dance experience.

This course is designed for students without any or very limited dance experience. The purpose of this class is to foster the joy of dance while teaching basics. Students develop their coordination, strength and flexibility through warm-up and short cross floor exercises that help them to develop dance vocabulary and technique. Students learn short pieces of choreography in a variety of genres, including hip-hop, jazz and contemporary, and perform them in class, but do not perform for large groups or in front of the school. Upon completion of Dance Foundations, students can be recommended to Dance Technique and Performance 9/10 or 11/12, or they may continue in Dance Foundations.
